Evaluation of the perception of seafood consumption in Mersin province

Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to determine the perception of seafood consumption, people who living in the central district of Mersin. The survey was applied face to face with 17 questions to 595 people determined by random sampling. The importance of fish consumption on human health was determined 67.17% of participants known to remarkably, 26.93% of moderately and 5.89% of slightly. Survey results showed that the most consumers in this region prefer to consume 53.53% of chicken, 33.33 % of red meat and 13.22 % of fish meat respectively. The participants reported that they don't consume fish of 32% due to the smell, 23% gutting and 13% taste. On the other hand, in this survey results was reported 76 % of fish consumers generally prefer to eat at home and other 24 % to eat outside. In this study, promotion of fishery products and market network were inadequate of by the consumers. There are many results to be observed from this study. However, one of the most obvious results that fish consumption can be increased with the result of a better promotion of seafood, exposing of a consumer profile and a better understanding of consumer perception.
