The comparison of technical college students academic achievement levels

The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a significant difference between the academic achievement levels of the students (n=333) who passed the university entrance exam and enrolled at the two year vocational school and the academic achievement levels of the students who enrolled these schools according to MSG (Vocational Placement Without University Exam) project. In line with the aim of the study mentioned above, the students? academic achievement were examined on the basis of their academic achievement of students at culture classes ( Foreign Language, Turkish Language and the Principles of Atatürk and the History of Turkish Revolution ), Mathematics and 1.class vocational lessons. In addition to this, the perceptions of the students and academic staff at DMYO (Düzce Technical College) on MSG were examined.In this study, the following sub-problems, given below, were answered in line with the aim of the study:1. Is there a significant difference in student academic success in relation to Turkish Language I and II courses between the students enrolled the two year vocational school by taking the university entrance examination and the ones enrolled without having taken they exam?2. Is there a significant difference in student academic success in relation to Principles of Atatürk and the History of Turkish Revolution classes between the students enrolled at the college by taking the university entrance examination and the ones enrolled without having taken they exam?3. Is there a significant difference in student academic success in relation to English I and II courses between the students enrolled at the college by taking the university entrance exam and the ones enrolled without having taken thay exam?4. Is there a significant difference in student academic success in relation to maths I and II courses between the students enrolled at the college by taking the university entrance exam and the ones enrolled without having taken thay exam?5. Is there a significant difference in the average grades of first year students of air conditraning and refrigeration tecnology, businessand administration, accounting programs students enrolled at DMYO by taking ÖSS and the students of the same programs enrolled at the two year vocational school according to the MSG Project?6. What are the perceptions of the students enrolled at DMYO according to university examination results and the ones enrolled according to the MSG Project about the effects of their highschool succes academic success in their fields in to their performance at college?7. What are the perceptions of the academic staff working at two year vocational schools about the academic succes of the students enrolled according to MSG Project?In this study, the documentary analysis was applied. In this respect, during the study, having taken the required and necessary permission, the personal files of the students (n=1891) enrolled in 2004 and 2005 were examined and during this process, the personal information required for the study were obtained by the researcher.After that the questionnaire developed by Kelecioğlu (2006) were completed by the academic staff (n =31) and the students (n=551) of two year vocational schools in order to obtain their perceptions about the project.During the study, in order to analyze the data collected SPSS 14.0 program was used and by means of this program, the mean, standart deviation, the frequency and the percentage values of the items were calculated and t-test was used.The analysis of the data collected indicate that the students who passed the unıversity enterance examination were more successful and had less difficulty in understanding both the cultural courses and vocational courses than the students who enrolled at MYO without taking the university entrance examination.In additıon to this when the perceptions of academic staff were examined, it is seen that the students graduated from vocational high schools were less successful in all courses than the students graduated from high schools and also the placement of the students in the two year vocational schools negative effects on their academic success and theır psychological and social developments. As a result it was concluded that the students enrolled at technical college by taking the university entrance examination were more successful in all subjects.Key Words: Vocational and Technical Education, Technical College,Vocational Placement without University Exam According
