The use of jazz music in flute education in professional music

In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the usage of jazz music and its contribution to the technical and musical achievements of the students in the flute education process within the scope of professional music education with the opinions of the instructor. Qualitative research method was used in the research. In this context, 16 flute faculty members working in institutions providing vocational music education were interviewed with a semi-structured interview form. As a result of the analysis of the data obtained from the interview questions, 7 themes and 47 codes were reached. In the direction of the themes and codes reached, It has been determined that jazz music is suitable for education at the conservatory level in institutions providing vocational music education; jazz music can be used in the professional flute education and to learn about different types of music; it contributes to repertoire diversity, technical acquisition, hearing education and improvisation ability and attracts students' attention. Besides, it has been determined that jazz music cannot be used in professional flute education due to its harmonic structure difficulty, absence in the curriculum, lack of method for various levels, lack of instructor knowledge, and being too soon for flute beginner level. Also, it has been determined that literature on the jazz music for flute education is quantitatively insufficient, the level of knowledge of instructors in jazz music is insufficient and this genre is not used in vocational flute education sufficiently. In addition, it was concluded that the usage of jazz music in the context of vocational music education contributes to the technical- musical- improvisation skills of the student.
