Investigation of the relation between internet use attitudes and social skills of students in vocational schools (Şişli district example)

This research is intended to define the relation between the internet use attitudes and social skills among the students of vocational schools. The study was carried out with a total number of 471 students, 79 girls and 392 boys, who are studying at the vocational schools in Şişli, İstanbul.In the research, 31-question ?Attitude Scale for the Internet Use?, developed by Keser and Tavşancıl (2002) and 90-question ?Social Skill Inventory?, developed by Riggio (1986) and adapted to Turkish by Yüksel (1997) and also another information form prepared by the researcher were used.In this research, independent samples t Test, Mann Whitney-U Test, One Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA), Kruskal Wallis-H Test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis are also applied with .05 significance level. Analysis was carried out through SPSS 15.0 software.According to the results gathered from the research a significant correlation was defined between the total scores of Internet Use Attitude Scale and the total scores of Social Skill Inventory emotional sensitivity, social sensitivity, social control and Social Skill Inventory. This correlation is positive and the higher total scores Internet Use Attitude Scale gets the higher total scores emotional sensitivity, social sensitivity, social control and Social Skill Inventory get. No significant correlation was found between the total scores of the other subcategories of Social Skill Inventory and Internet Use Attitude Scale.Keywords: The Internet, attitude, social skill, Internet Use Attitude Scale, Social Skill Inventory
