Mean platelet volume levels in patients with metabolic syndrome and insülin resistance

Purpose: Metabolic syndrome (MS), emerged in the basis of insulin resistance, is a collection of risk factors associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in which there is a clinical picture containing proinflammatory and prothrombotic items. In our study, in patients with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, the association between the metabolic syndrome components and the levels of mean platelet volume (MPV) which is one of the cardiovascular risk factors aimed to be evaluated.Material and method: In this study 122 patients and 38 healthy control subjects admitted to the Duzce University Endocrinology and Internal Medicine clinics between November 2010 ? January 2011 included. The case group of patients, who were obese, divided into three groups according to MS criteria and insulin resistance. Patients waist/hip ratio, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, and MPV were measured. HOMA values were calculated.Results: In the all parameters of the MS there was statistically significant elevation in patients in metabolic syndrome than the control group. In the group with insulin resistance, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, uric acid, hsCRP values were found significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). In multiple regression analysis with the presence of hepatosteatosis, a positive significant relationship was found between the values of BMI, HOMA-IR, ALT, and LDL cholesterol levels. When the MPV results of the cases were examined, there was not any statistically significant differences found in between the groups.Conclusion: In our study, MPV which is suggested as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and thrombotic events have shown to be no relationship with MS and its criterias. We believe that to evaluate the efficacy of MPV in the follow-up of patients with metabolic syndrome and predicting the risk of microvascular complications, large-scale and long-term studies are needed.Key words: Methabolic syndrome, insüline resistance, mean platelet volume.
