Research on nutrition and anthropometric risk factors related to insulin resistance in adults which are directed to diet therapy with the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate nutritional and anthropometric risk factors related to insulin resistance in adults who are directed to diet therapy with the diagnos is of metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on patients who received service from Iğdır State Hospital Diet Polyclinic between November and December 2019. Between the ages of 18-63, weight, BMI, fat ratio, waist circumference, neck circumference, waist/height ratio, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, HOMA-IR, serum cholesterol, serum LDL-k, serum HDL-k, serum glucose and serum triglyceride levels was made retrospectively from the data of 67 patients. Of the 67 people whose data is used, 14 are men and 53 are women. Result: As a result of the statistical analysis of the data obtained; Metabolic syndrome was detected in 26 of the people whose data was used, while metabolic syndrome was not found in 41 people. The rate of occurrence of metabolic syndrome in patients with insulin resistance was found to be statistically significantly higher than those without (p = 0.002; p <0.01).Serum LDL-k and serum HDL-c values of patients with metabolic syndrome were found to be significantly higher than those without (respectively: p = 0.006; p <0.01; p = 0.001; p <0.01). In addition, after the correlation test, a negative correlation was found between the waist circumference and the serum iron levels of the individuals (p <0.05). Conclusion: Among the data included in the study, differences were found between blood findings and anthropometric measurements of those with and without metabolic syndrome. As a result; Metabolic syndrome should be considered as a possible condition in all patients referred to a dietician with a diagnosis of obesity / diabetes mellutus / cardiovascular diseases / insulin resistance for dietary advice and treatment.
