ABSTRACTTool wear is one of the main problems in machining. Because, worn tools cause both loss oflabor, material and time, it unfavorably affect process efficiency and cost. Therefore, tool wearshould be both controllable and predictable. Control of wear requires estimations of tool life howprevious usage and tool properties taking account the type of wear involved.In this study, The wear behaviour of cutting tools whose surface had been modified using metalvapor ion implantation(MEVVA) were investigated. Mo, Cr, Ti and Zr metal ions at various dosewere implanted in cutting tools with MEVVA at the Australian Nuclear Sciense and TechnologyOrganisation. These samples were named `Mo-500K?, `Mo-1000K?, `Cr-500K?, `Cr-1000K?, `Ti-500K?, `Ti-1000K?, `Zr-500K?, `Zr-1000K? and `Untreated?. The cutting tests were performed inaccordance to the International Standards of Organization ISO 3685 `Tool-life testing with singlepoint turning tools?. All of the tests were performed on AISI 4140 workpiece material that hadbeen prepared to a size of â
120x300mm.Machining parameters for the wear tests were a cutting speed of 180m/min, feedrate of 0.3mm/rev and a depth of cut of 2 mm. The cutting process was performed without coolant.For the cutting force measurement, a strain gauge dynamometer was designed and constructedto measure the main cutting force(Fc) and feedrate force(Fa). Tests were performed when themachining parameters were feedrate of 0.3 mm/rev and depth of cut of 2 mm. These twoparameters were fixed and 180 m/min,300 m/min cutting speed were used.In view of the test results, the life of the tools whose surfaces were modified using metal vaporion implantation(MEVVA) was increased. It was found that when the cutting speed increased,the cutting forces were reduced.
