Clinical and histopathological properties at diagnosis according to the ras mutation status of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer

Introduction and Objective: The literature on the clinical and pathological features of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer for Ras mutation status is limited. In this study, it was aimed to compare the clinical histopathologic features of the patients with metastatic colorectal cancer patients by the Ras mutation sta-tus at the time of diagnosis. Materials and Methods: : File records of patients with diagnosing colo-rectal cancer who were followed-up and treated at Department of Oncology in Afyon Kocatepe University Medical Faculty Hospital between 01.04.2012 and 24.08.2017 was analyzed retrospectively. A totally 530 patients' data were evalu-ated. Seventy-five patients who were metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis and who developed metastasis during follow-up, and who were known Ras muta-tion status were included in the study. Among the Ras mutant and non-mutant groups; tumor localization, location of metastases at diagnosis, relation with tu-mor markers, relation with tumor differentiation grade and general survival were compared with literature data. Findings: Ras mutation rate was 50.7%. At the same time, the most frequ-ent Ras mutation was observed in exon-2 region (76%). According to Ras muta-tion status, clinical and histopathologic features did not showed statistical diffe-rence. Overall survival of Ras wild type patients was statistically significantly longer than mutant patients. In Ras wild type, Cetuximab/Panitumumab was lon-ger overall survival than bevacizumab in first line treatment but, statistical diffe-rence was not detected. In the left sided colon tumor, cetuximab/panitumumab treatment arm was longer overall survival than bevacizumab treatment arm but this difference was not statistically significant. In patients treated with cetuximab/ panitumumab, the overall survival was longer in left sided than right sided colon tumors. Conclusion: Although our study has some limitations, our data are similar to those of the western community, especially when compared to other limited number of studies. However, there is a need for more extensive work to be done in this issue.
