Text, image, ideology: religious typologies in the Early Republican Turkish novel (1923-1938)

In this study, the text is discussed through the concepts of image and ideology, religious typologies in Turkish novels published between 1923-1938. In the texts, which are the sum of the images shaped within the framework of the ideological perspective of the novelist and reflect the social, political and cultural life of the period; the religious perceptions, crises of faith, religious and secular behavior practices of the characters in the novel were analyzed, and the reflections of the revolutions in the Republican Period, which included religious areas, were tried to be determined. In the study, based on the novelists included in the Revolution canon, the typologies of the clergy in the novels that also function as an ideological device were classified, and the effects of the modernization project on daily practices, dress and body were evaluated through the characters of the novels. The spaces in the fiction of the novel are discussed in terms of their ideology and symbolic values, and the effects of the Republic and modernization on the space perception of the characters of the novel are discussed. Tracing the transformation of the clergy and clergy who had a great influence in the traditional Ottoman social life with the modernization project of the Republic, makes our study important, which aims to examine the religious typologies in the novels of the Republic Period.
