A critical approach to class differences in science fiction cinema from metropolis to Elysium

From primitive communities to today's postmodern societies, people live in various categories, separated by their physical, economic, cultural or social qualities. These categories of individuals lead to the separation of people from many different areas, from everyday life practices to intellectual life. Particularly since the period of industrialization, the distinction between social classes has become more evident and has brought many theoretical discussions about class differences. The concept of maktad class 'has been dealt with in different ways by various thinkers, from Karl Marx to contemporary stratification theorists. As in many other fields, social classes are often considered in cinema, also called seventh art branch. It is important to understand how the cinema, which is based on the imitation of social reality, represents the social classes and to understand the society in which they live. The importance of science fiction films that reflect the future and the near future, based on the existing realities, further increases this importance. In this sense, considering the fact that cinema is a cultural and commercial vehicle, the text analysis method of the Center for Cultural Studies has been applied; Metropolis, Elysium, Hunger Games and Divergent were selected as examples and the films were analyzed with theoretical knowledge about class differences. The aim of the study is to show how class differences are represented in science fiction cinema and to discuss whether class distinctions are going on in these films which tell about the future centuries.
