Investigate of oxidant-antioxidant balance of role in migraine etiology

Abstract (EN)

Migraine is a neurovascular disorder, which has a multifactorial pathogenesis associated with the various biochemical, genetic and environmental factors. Although many researches have been conducted to research migraine etiopathogenesis, no exact conclusion could be reached yet. In recent years, importance of oxidative stress on migraine pathogenesis like on many diseases is being researched. Decreased serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity is a risk factor for several disorders, including ischaemic stroke, coronary artery disease and Alzheimer's disease. PON-1 prevents oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.In this study, we investigated Malondialdehyde (MDA) of a lipid peroxidation,total antioxidant capacity, serum PON-1 activity and the serum lipid profile in patients with migraine and healthy subjects in order to reveal their role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Sixty patients with migraine (28 with aura, 32 without aura) and 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Serum PON-1 activity,MDA ,total antioxidan capacity and the parameters of lipid profile were measured using spectrophotometric methods.We detected a statistically remarkable decrease in PON-1, Total Antioxidant Capacity levels between the patients suffering from migraine and control group(p<0.05). But these parameters were not different between of patients migraine with and without aura (p=0.342 and p=0.917,respectively).Plasma MDA levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls (p<0.05).And there was a statistically remarkable difference between of patients migraine with and without aura(p=0.000).Serum LDL,TC,TG levels were found significantly higher in migraineurs than controls (p < 0.05). Serum HDL levels were significantly lower in migraine than controls (p<0.05). These parameters were different between of patients migraine with and without aura (p=0.000,p=0.029,p=0.000,p=0.000 respectively ). When the patients were divided into subgroups of migraine with aura and migraine without aura, plasma MDA ,LDL,TG,TC levels were significantly higher and PON-1,HDL,Total Antioxidant capacity levels were significantly lower than in controls in both subgroups (p=0.000).Consequently,higher MDA ,lower TAOK levels were found in migraine patients has been postulated that the synthesis of free radicals may trigger migraine attacks by increasing oxidative stres and lower PON-1 activity,HDL levels,higher TC,LDL levels may have a clinical importance in the treatment of migraine.Key words: MIGRAINE, MALONDIALDEHYDE,PARAOXONASE,TOTAL ANTIOXIDAN CAPASITY
