Abstract (EN)
Aim: Migraine is a primary episodic headache which chacterized with neurological changes. Migraine is a highly prevalent neurovasculer disorder. It represents an enormous socioeconomic burden to the individual as well as to the society and affects the quality of life. Although many researches have been conducted to research migraine etiopathogenesis, no exact conclusion could be reached yet. In recent years, importance of oxidative stress on migraine pathogenesis like on many diseases is being researched. In addition oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage has not been investigated together in Migraine. In this study, we aimed to evaluate oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage in patients with Migraine. Methods: Fifty patients with Migraine who were diagnosed in Neurology Clinic of Gaziantep University of and 30 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Serum 8-hydroxideoxiguanosine (8-OHdG), Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Total Oxidant Status (TOS) evaluation and Oxidative Stress Index (OSI) calculation were conducted in Gaziantep University Biochemical Laboratory. Results: There were not significant differences of TAS, TOS and OSI levels between patients and control group. However, 8-OHdG levels were significantly higher in Migraine patients than controls (p: 0.001). Discussion: In our study, we could not find TAS, TOS and OSI levels higher versus controls , indicates that oxidative DNA damage leads to deficiency in the antioxidant defense system increases the level of oxidative DNA damage seen in patients. There were no differences between the patient and control groups in terms of oxidative metabolism. It also suggests that DNA damage may start before the start of oxidative deterioration in the laboratory level. Key words: Migraine, oxidative stress, DNA damage
