Mihrişah Valide Sultan Humbarhane Mosque

Humbarahane Barracks was built by Selim III in 1792 in Halıcıoğlu neighborhood of Beyoğlu district. Mihrişah Valide Sultan (Humbarhane) Mosque, located in the middle of the courtyard of the barracks, was built in 1794 by Mihrişah Valide Sultan, mother of Selim III. The barracks is known as the first modern example of military buildings built to be used for military purposes. The barracks consisted of a bathhouse, cannon casting furnaces, masjid, training grounds, lodgings and shops. During the construction of the Golden Horn bridge between 1971-1974, a large part of the barracks was destroyed and only some small parts of the barracks and the Humbarhane (Kumbarhane) Mosque under the Golden Horn bridge have survived to the present day.Until this time, Mihrişah Valide Sultan (Humbarhane) Mosque, which remains from the Humbarahane Barracks, has not been extensively discussed and analyzed. The studies conducted within the scope of this thesis consist of four chapters. The aim, scope and method of the thesis are discussed in the introduction. In the first chapter, the history of the emergence of the barracks and the general characteristics of the building are given. In the second chapter, the location and history of the mosque are given. In the third chapter, the building is discussed architecturally and the materials and construction techniques used are discussed in detail. In the fourth section, the damage and repairs that the mosque has undergone and the latest restoration work have been examined. In the last section, evaluations are made and conclusions and suggestions are developed.
