Perception of structure in architecture education studio courses

In this thesis, it has been investigated how the concept of structure, which is an integral part of architectural design, is perceived in studio classes. Studio courses design concepts are expressed and cover almost half of the training program. In studio courses, previously acquired knowledge is synthesized. Architecture is defined as the combination of art and science. The question arises of how knowledgeable an architect should be about the structure that intersects with the engineering field, and how to express this subject to the students in the studio lessons, which constitute half of the education. Each component of architectural education is in interaction with each other. For this reason, it is difficult to separate the problems in a particular field, such as structure education, from the whole education. If the deduction method goes to the source of the problem, uncertainty of architectural discipline boundaries, the separation of architect-civil engineer disciplines in the architectural education curriculum, the lack of adequate response to the concept of structure in studio courses in architectural education problems were identified. In the thesis, the concept of structure is examined in detail, the necessary conditions and the acting loads are mentioned. In the sub-title of effective loads, earthquake load has been comprehensively discussed due to the high seismic risk of our country. The development of structural systems in the historical process is explained. The relationship between the structure and the architecture and its position in the design process are mentioned. Experimental examples aims to integrate design and structure in architectural education are examined. The field research of the thesis study was conducted with architecture undergraduate students who took studio courses and lecturers who give studio courses. In the studio courses, the perception of the existing structure was determined, and then suggestions were presented for the integration of the structural information obtained from the field of building knowledge and engineering-based field with the design in the studio courses. The problems in structural education have been evaluated together with the problems of architectural education in our country such as internship, professional competence and duration of education.
