Analysis of natural light and aesthetic design in architecture through examples

Integration of natural light into architectural design not only enhances the visual appeal of buildings, but also promotes occupant comfort, productivity, and energy efficiency. By employing thoughtful design strategies such as orientation optimization, strategic window placement, and light reflective surfaces, architects can create spaces that prioritize natural lighting while minimizing reliance on artificial light sources. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the instruments and ways in which natural light can be used to achieve a successful architectural and aesthetic design, analyzing as an example the DZ Bank in Berlin by architect Frank Gehry. Utilizing a qualitative methodology that combines descriptive and observational approaches, the research analyzes the impact of both natural and artificial lighting on architectural aesthetics and functionality. The descriptive method was first used to understand what light instruments are, where and when they are used and to understand how they can distribute light to achieve different purposes. Secondly, this approach was also used in the collection of data about the architect Frank Gehry, his approach to architectural activities, with special emphasis on the DZ Bank in Berlin. On the other hand, the observational method was used during the visit and data collection at DZ Bank, to create a more detailed analysis of this case study. Through a comprehensive literature review and a detailed case study, the study examines how light enhances visual health, economic benefits, and emotional well-being in architectural spaces. The research highlights the strategic use of openings, such as windows and skylights, and materials that influence the quality and distribution of light. By exploring Gehry's innovative lighting strategies, the study demonstrates how natural light can create dynamic and engaging interior environments, contributing significantly to the aesthetic and functional qualities of architecture. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating natural light in modern architectural practices to create spaces that are not only visually appealing but also conducive to human health and well-being. This work contributes to the field of architecture by providing insights into the effective use of light and shadow, advocating for designs that prioritize both aesthetic and functional excellence. It underscores the need for ongoing innovation in lighting to foster sustainable and health-promoting environments.
