Computational design techniques in architecture and examples in Turkey

The spread of virtual communication tools and personal computers in line with the fast developing computer technologies towards the end of the 20th century have influenced architecture as well as many other disciplines. They were initially used as tools for architectural drawing but they started to be researched as a medium of representation themselves with the expansion of their coverege area. While the concepts, such as algorthym, parameter and animation, which belong to different disciplines were transferred to the discipline of architecture, non-Eucledean geometries that are difficult to visualize by traditional representation tools could be both visualized and constructed with the computing capabilities of the computers.The computer, which was used at the beginning as a tool for producing fast and qualified drawing in architectural practice with its computing capability, started to be included in the initial phases of architectural design and production; thus becoming one of the most effective architectural representation tool of today. In the works produced with computational design techniques, which were initially researched and tried abroad, a functionality of being a design medium was added to the computer?s representational function. Although the reflections of such works in Turkey are sometimes criticised to be the product of fashion, there are some prominent figures who are researching architects aware of the mathematical and geometrical mechanism and implement behind computational design carry out serious works with these design techniques both in Turkey and abroad. Avcıoğlu & Gün architect profiles, determined for the scope of this thesis, do not just transfer imitate and transfer formalistically but do research and apply these techniques, styles and geometries from different perspectives. Thus, the thesis includes both the transfer of the computational design techniques to Turkey and the domestic examples of the works produced with these techniques.Recent years have shown that development process of computers is not over yet and that the computer-aided works are inclined towards architectural designs. The subject of this thesis, geometry, computational design techniques and the transfer of these techniques to Turkey will be handled within this scope and developments in this area will be observed from this perspective.
