Meaning comparisons of original Arabic words past from Arabic to Turkish in the Modern Turkish Lexicon (C letter)

In interlingual lexical exchange, especially in the case of borrowed words, lexical items may undergo various semantic transformations during their integration into the recipient language's political, social, cultural, and economic structures. Evaluating these semantic changes within the frameworks of linguistic subfields such as semantics and pragmatics can offer significant contributions to both theoretical and applied linguistics, particularly lexicography. In this respect, this study aims to examine the semantic shifts undergone by Arabic-origin words in Turkish over the course of history by addressing the phenomenon of meaning change within the context of Arabic-Turkish interaction through an interdisciplinary approach, and to establish a scientific basis for these transformations. In the first stage of the study, Arabic-origin words listed under the entry "C" in the Misalli Büyük Türkçe Sözlük (Comprehensive Turkish Dictionary), published by the Kubbealtı Academy Culture and Art Foundation, were identified. Considering the high number of Arabic-origin words in Turkish, the study is limited to the "C" entry of the dictionary. The primary and secondary meanings of these words, as recorded in the dictionary, have been directly conveyed. In the second stage, the meanings of these words in contemporary Egyptian Arabic dictionaries were determined; both historical and contemporary usage examples were analyzed, and comparisons were made with their meanings in Turkish. In the third stage, conclusions drawn from these comparisons were presented as the findings of the study.
