World War One from the window of humor

Many studies on the World War One have been done and continue to be done so far. These studies are mostly related to the general history of the war, it's causes/consequences, it's military, political and social aspects. Later, studies were carried out on the propagandist, psychological, philosophical and visual aspects of the war. In this war, submarines, aircraft, airships were used in the most spacious and modernized way, and for the first time tanks, gas, gas masks and cannons with expanded diameter took the stage. Different studies have also been carried out on these ammunition and vehicles used in the war. In this study, we tried to examine the approach of Karagöz humor newspaper, which is a propaganda tool due to the censorship brought by the war, to the war. The most important reason for choosing Karagöz newspaper in our study is that it is the only humor newspaper that has been published continuously throughout the war. The juxtaposition of comedy and the concept of war is one of the other factors that push us to this study. During our study, all the newspapers that appeared from the beginning to the end of the war were scanned and transcripted to Turkish. In our research, we have seen that there have been number of studies on a region or front related to the humorous aspect of the war, including Karagöz. The caricatures and verse/prosaic texts that Karagöz carried to his columns about war in Europe, the Ottoman Empire, Iran, the Far East, Africa and all the seas were used in our study. In these aspects, our work is the most comprehensive study in which the humorous aspect of war is examined. In addition, the newspaper's two different approaches before and after the Ottoman entry into the war were revealed. The newspaper first announced the true face of the war to its readers politically and militarily, and after 1917, with the easing of censorship, in terms of epidemic diseases, poverty, cost of living, war opportunists and those who made unfair profits. Among these, we preferred the way of examining the war from a military and political point of view and examining it in depth. We considered it appropriate to form the parts of our work from the first to the last year of the war in annual time frames. In this way we tried to present a more compact study.
