The effects of mobile assisted counselling application on novice teachers' perceptions of self efficacy and attitudes towards teaching profession

The aim of the study is to reveal the effect of mobile-assisted counselling application on novice teachers' self-efficacy perceptions and attitudes towards the teaching profession. For this purpose, the embedded mixed method, in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together, has been adopted. In the quantitative dimension of the study, pretest-posttest control group experimental design was used, while in the qualitative dimension, the case study method was used to examine the findings in depth. The study group of the study consists of 74 classroom teachers who were first appointed to primary schools with transport-based and unified classrooms in the provinces of Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır and Mardin in 2018-2019 academic year. The study group was chosen by purposeful sampling from non-random sampling methods. The experimental group subjected to mobile-assisted counselling application consists of 37 people, and the control group subjected to the usual practices consists of 37 people. In the qualitative part of the study, 17 teachers were selected on a voluntary basis among 37 teachers in the experimental group and face-to-face interviews were conducted. In the quantitative dimension of the study, "Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale" (ÖYÖ), which was developed by Tschannen-Moran and Hoy (2001) and adapted to Turkish by Çapa Çakıroğlu and Sarıkaya (2005), was used to determine teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy as a data collection tool. In order to determine teachers' attitudes towards the teaching profession, the "Attitude Scale of Teachers towards Teaching Profession" developed by Demirel and Unişen (2018) was used. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the scores of the experimental group teachers obtained from the self-efficacy scale differed significantly in favor of the experimental group. In addition, it was found that there is a significant difference in terms of marital status in favor of single teachers, in favor of teachers who have children in terms of having children, in terms of the type of school in favor of teachers working in schools with unified classrooms. Based on the present findings, it was concluded that the application was effective in improving self-efficacy perceptions of novice teachers. In addition, according to the teachers 'opinions, it was revealed that the application was sufficient in solving the professional problems experienced in the first year, and the application was very effective in increasing teachers' self-confidence and gaining professional experience. It was also found that the effect of the application manifests itself most intensely in the first periods of work and in socially isolated environments with teachers. Based on the results obtained from the research, suggestions were made to the decision makers/practitioners to establish mobile assisted teacher consultancy groups in the first month of their career and to create a data pool to be used in the activities to be carried out in these groups. Suggestions have been made for researchers to carry out studies to determine the needs of novice teachers working in the region about the structured contents that can be used in practice in the future.
