$678'<2172:+$7(;7(177+(&$3$%ø/ø7ø(6*ø9(1ø1)$6+ø21SECTOR'(6ø*1352*5$060((77+(1(('62)7+(5($'<&/27+(61$ø/((5'2ö$1ABSTRACTIn this study, what the skills that are taught in graduate studies and private designcourses, and what ready clothes sector expects from the designers and how much the skillstaught in educational institutions mentioned above meet the expectations of ready clothssector.The subjects of this study are the people who are responsible for the productimprovement in ready clothes enterprises which are in Ankara and Bursa. The respondents ofthe study are people who are responsible for the product improvement part of 30 enterpriseswhich were selected among the ones that were suitable for the purpose of this study; and thisgroup constitutes 30% of the subjects.In the study, in order to determine the skills that are taught in graduate studies andprivate design courses the programs of the institutions mentioned above have been analyzed,the ideas of the experts in fashion design about the skills which were categorized intoknowledge, ability/ skills and attitudes were questioned. In the questionnaire which is appliedto the people who are responsible for the product improvement part there are 17 test- typequestions which aim to learn about enterprises, the opportunities given to designers and theexpectations from the designers. The skills taught in fashion design programs and designedaccording to the experts? opinions, have been designed in table form as criterions ofevaluating the designer and have been placed into the enterprises questionnaire.The data collected from the questionnaires given to experts and people who areresponsible for the product improvement, have been analyzed through the SPSS program onthe computer.As the results of the study (carried out on the people who are responsible for theproduct improvement part) indicate the qualifications the enterprises expect from thedesigners before they recruit them are job experience, creativity and being ready for team-wok. It has been found out that the designers working in enterprises have the qualificationswhich are related to knowledge and skills related to research and manufacturing and whichare related to attitudes- interests such as doing research in their fields, following the sourcesand adjusting to group work.Educational programs should be arranged and updated according to the changes in thesector by determining the necessary capacities that should be available in fashion designers.
