Abstract (EN)

As the name suggests, the Silk Road derives its title from silk, the most valuable commodity historically transported along this route. China initiated the Modern Silk Road Project as a strategic response to its geoeconomic and geopolitical needs. Designed as a revitalized version of the ancient Silk Road, this ambitious project aims to enable uninterrupted transportation between Asia, Europe, and Africa through an extensive multimodal network of land, sea, and railway corridors. At its core, the Modern Silk Road Project comprises two main components: the Silk Road Economic Belt, encompassing land and rail routes, and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which includes sea lanes. To operationalize the project, China has invested in massive infrastructure initiatives across numerous countries. In order to finance these ventures, institutions such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the Silk Road Fund, and the New Development Bank were established, with their combined capital estimated at approximately $240 billion. The project is considered highly significant for the global economy, with nearly 150 participating countries and an expected impact on around 5 billion people. Its projected cost ranges between $4 to $8 trillion, and it already influences an estimated 40% of global GDP through trade flows. Due to its geostrategic location, Turkey lies at the heart of the project, acting as a pivotal bridge between Asia and Europe via the Middle Corridor. Several key infrastructure projects have been completed or are underway in Turkey as part of this initiative. Among the completed projects are the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) high-speed railway, Marmaray tunnel, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, and Istanbul Airport—all of which are critical to enhancing transportation within the corridor. One of the most important ongoing investments is the Edirne–Kars High-Speed Railway Line. Once completed, it will link directly to the BTK line, allowing freight trains from China to reach Europe along a single continuous route. The impact of the Modern Silk Road Project on Turkey has been examined in detail using the SWOT Analysis method.
