The reflections of mental perplexity in modernization process in post 1980's era Turkey's cinema

The faults of modernisation are considered not only in community life but also in cinema. Modernisation is based on basis of adopting and applying the ones the West owns because modernisation is mostly perceived as a goal that has to be achieved in the non-Western countries such as Turkey. However, uninternalised change, considering modernisation as a form independent from its origin are ended in occuring different modernisation perceptions in community; because modernisation is the process of progress depending on the internal and external dynamics of the Western countries. The thought of experiencing modernisation in the non-Western countries differently from the Western countries is commonly ignored. The social, cultural, geographical, economic structure of Turkey and the mentality of society are crucial factors to determine the route of change. Therefore, modernisation processes of various societies bear a resemblance to eachother in despite of including differences. In this process the individual whose mentality is unconvertible / hard to convert has difficulty in making sense of the innovations adopted from the West and is obliged to go through the process the individual doesn?t own. Thus, in society modern/conventional or nouveau/ancient have to live together, a complexity occurs in society in this process of change.It is regarded that cinema in Turkey like its society has mostly preferred to apply modern structures as a form independently of its own internal dynamics for quite a long time. Additionally it is appeared that the comprehension of authentic cinema in Turkey is late to form and cinema cannot reflect its own society properly. Besides, cinema is fragmentary to advance the society in Turkey. Art is the product of the mentality of society. In this context, director holds and reflects the mentality of society. Adopting the modern arguements by reinterpreting without declining cultural values and within autocritique in Turkey is critically important to resolve the mentality complexity.This thesis analyses the dual structures and complexity modernisation has caused in. Claude Lévi-Strauss?s structural analysis is made use of in the point of presenting conventional and modern complexity. Structural analysis is based on basis of organising a range of data and classifying structures systematically. Thus, presenting contrary arguements (modern/conventional, the Occident/the Orient, nouveau/ancient, etc.) on the scale of contrasts in filmic narrations and exclusions is critically important. In this point of view, the films called Kurbağalar, Bir Kadının Anatomisi, Muhsin Bey and Kasaba are put through structural analysis.
