Power-provincial relations in the modernisation period: `Province' in Turkish literature

The aim of this thesis is to discuss within the bounds of literary works the transformation the Province has undergone in the context of modernity. Making literature the subject of analysis required primary discussion of Ideology and Esthetics categories together. It was attempted to analyze, the relationship between the tendency to compensate in literature the unity feeling related to the disintegrated modern world, and the aggregation strategy of the modern nation state, implying the inclusion of the province. During the formation of nation state, modernity has transformed the role and the place of the Province. The apprehension of ?united world?, ruined by Modernity and started to be rebuild, makes up the pushing force of the transformation the province undergoes. The requirement of the transformation of Province was the result of the necessity of being included by the whole. The transformation process, the province undergoes, could be followed through the literary works. In the first part of the thesis the working mechanisms of literature and ideology were discussed on the basis of novel, as a modern literary type. The second part is devoted to the journey of relationship between the province and political power in the historical process from the Ottoman Empire towards the Republic of Turkey. In the third and final part, within the theoretical bounds put forward by the first and second parts, the representations of province in literature, and the discursive forms of transformations of the Province, tried to be made the part of the unity, were discussed. Lacan, Lukacs and Bahtin were the names which became prominent in accordance with the theoretical bounds of the thesis.Key words1-Modernity2-Province Literature3-Esthetics4-Hegemony5-Centre-surroundings theorization.
