Abstract (EN)

Ismail Hakkı Bey is among the leading masters and last Ottomans of the Turkish music. He was born in the last quarter of the 19th century, saw five sultans during his life, and witnessed the establishment of the Republic. He benefitted from the cultural and artistic developments of the mentioned period, in which the stage of history was quite dramatic and turbulent. On the one hand, he produced works in traditional styles, with which he had been molded as he had received education at the court, and on the other hand, he turned his face toward the west in an attempt to renew the tradition. Ismail Hakkı Bey worked not only in the area of composition, but in all areas of music, authoring works on theories and education and playing an effective role in the education of Turkish music so much that he deserved being called a teacher. The duality of the modernization process, during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, influenced Ismail Hakkı Bey just like the other composers, and led him to producing works accordingly. This thesis will seek answers to the questions about the identity of Ismail Hakkı Bey, the stance he took in such a period and also the effects of social change on his life and the works on religous music forms.
