Abstract (EN)

Wallace Chan's place in contemporary jewelry art deserves a scientific investigation due to the unique combination of innovation, craftsmanship and aesthetic sophistication that characterizes his works. This thesis makes a rigorous investigation of Chan's Deceptively important contributions to the field by using interdisciplinary methodologies covering art history, design theory and materials science to illuminate the intricacies of Chan's creative vision. At the center of the analysis is a rigorous examination of Chan's pioneering techniques, in particular the patented 'Wallace Cut' technique, known for its transformative effects on precious stones and equipping them with a spiritual brilliance that has hitherto been unattainable in jewelry design. In addition, the study aims to examine Chan's skillful use of unconventional materials, from titanium to porcelain, and to reveal the instrumental role of these materials in reshaping the parameters of jewelry as a wearable art form. Beyond technical mastery, the thesis explores in depth the philosophical foundations of Chan's artistic practice, revealing a deep synthesis of nature, spirituality and cultural heritage. Placing Chan's work within the broader discourses of contemporary art and cultural theory, this research aims to highlight the deep socio-cultural consequences of jewelry art by challenging well-established concepts such as luxury, beauty and craftsmanship. Through a rigorous analysis of Chan's seminal works and their contextual underpinnings, this scholarly effort seeks to unlock the transformative potential inherent in jewelry as a channel for artistic expression. As a result, this thesis evaluates Wallace Chan as an art visionary beyond just being a jeweler. Her works bring the power of jewelry to the foreground for artistic expression, while encouraging viewers to think and explore the sublime. This evaluation, in addition to the contribution of jewelry studies to academic literature, reveals the potential of enriching our cultural life at the intersection of art, craftsmanship and innovation concepts.
