Abstract (EN)
This thesis aims to produce a critical edition and analysis of the marginal commentary (ḥāshiyah) written by Muhammad al-Shiranshi (d. 1016/1607), one of the Ottoman scholars who taught at the Ikhlasiyya Madrasa in Bitlis, on the work Anwār al-Tanzīl wa Asrār al-Ta'wīl. In this work, the author clearly explicates the words of al-Bayḍāwī (d. 685/1286) and responds to objections raised by some other commentators. The work includes not only transmitted (naqlī) and rational ('aqlī) sciences but also other types of knowledge expected to be found in a Qur'anic commentary (tafsīr). In the first chapter of the thesis, the life of al-Bayḍāwī is examined based on biographical (ṭabaqāt) sources. The second chapter deals with the life of -Shiranshi. The third chapter discusses the title of the work, its attribution to the author, the number of manuscript copies, and their characteristics. of its manuscript copies. Furthermore, the methodology employed by the author, the sources he relied on, and the abbreviations used by the copyists are detailed. Lastly, the section covering from Sūrat al-Naba' to Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn is critically edited. In the critical edition, the manuscript considered closest to the author's time and least prone to error was taken as the base text. This main manuscript was compared with four other manuscripts—selected from among the twenty-three available copies—based on their legibility and accuracy. In addition, the Qur'anic verses cited in the work have been clearly identified, hadiths have been sourced and verified (takhrīj), the origins of poems have been traced, and biographical information has been provided on the individuals mentioned in the text. Through this study, an important work within the Islamic scholarly tradition has been brought to light through a scientific method and presented for the benefit of researchers and scholars.
