Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between serum inflammatory marker levels, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings, Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), quality of life, depression and nutritional status in women diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). 153 volunteer women aged 20-50 (73 MS patients and 80 control group) living in Ankara participated in the study. General characteristics of the women, anthropometric measurements, Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Scale (MSQOL-54), Beck Depression Scale 21 (BDI), MIND Diet Score (MIND), three-day food consumption record and Healthy Eating Index-2015 (SYI-2015) and Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII)) and biochemical findings were evaluated. It was observed that the average waist circumference of individuals in the MS group (84.5±12.22 cm) was significantly higher than the average of individuals in the control group (80.5±10.60 cm) (p<0.05). The average BDI score of the individuals was (10.3±8.25), 12.9±9.66 points in the MS group and 7.9±6.16 points in the control group. The mean depression score of the MS group was found to be higher than the control group (p<0.05). The mean MIND diet score score of the MS group (6.3±1.90) was significantly lower (p<0.05) compared to the control group (6.9±1.71). DII and HEI-2015 mean scores of the control group (2.2±2.34 and 44.6±9.86, respectively) were lower than those of the MS group (2.4±2.43 and 44.8±12.69). While 64.2% of the MS group had a poor diet, 72.5% of the control group had a bad diet. The diet needing improvement was 27.5% in the control group and 34.6% in the MS group. MS. Since the MIND diet score is significantly lower in individuals with MS, it would be beneficial for individuals with MS to plan individual medical nutrition treatment by a dietitian to improve their nutrition, increase their diet quality, and raise more awareness about healthy and balanced nutrition.
