Islamic women's movement since the 1980s through the life story of a Muslim feminist

Feminism is a stream of ideas aimed at removing inequality between men and women, and ensuring gender equality. This term, which was first heard in the 18th century, has been the name of the struggle over the years that women have maintained to achieve a dignified life. With the influence of neoliberal policies and globalization, the Islamist movement gained strength in the 1980s. Within that period, Islamic Feminism has been the name of the movement, which women seek for rights through Islamic paradigm. Being used first in Iran, this term was heard in Turkey in 1987 with a journal headline 'Turbaned Feminists'. These intellectual and turbaned women were fighting for gender equality, having place in public sphere with their headscarves, and holding the agenda of the 1990s. For Islamic woman, headscarf was a mark of freedom, therefore; she pursued all her right-seeking path on discourse of headscarf victimization. On the other hand, especially in recent years, Islamic women's discourse has changed. They began talking more about universal themes on the basis of human rights. This thesis was carried out through life story method with Zeynep Göknil Şanal to understand Islam and feminism relationship from her perspective. Şanal is the term president of Capital City Women's Platform founded by mostly women theologians with the aim of extracting anti-female discourses from Islam.
