Effects of the analitical memorization method on the achievements of students of the music education department on playing piano pieces from memory

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of the analitical memorization method on the achievements of students of the Music Education Department on playing piano pieces from memory.The model of the research was ?quasi-experimental model? based on nonequivalent control group. The population of the research was the entire group of students at the Music Department of Gazi Education College of Gazi University. The sample, 22 students, was selected from the population of the third year students of 2009-2010 academic year.The subjects included in this study was randomly assigned to either the control group or the experimental group. Two piano pieces selected to use for the experimentation. One of the pieces was given to both groups of students to memorize at the pre-test time. The other piece was given to students of control group to memorize by themselves while the same piece was taught to the students of experimental group by the researcher using analitical memorization method. Each student?s performance was recorded during the pre-test and post-test periods.At the end of the experimentation, the recording of performances was evaluated by three piano teachers using evaluation scale developed by the researcher. The data collected was compared to each other by Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U Test, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).As a result of the research, it was found out that the effects of the analitical memorization method on the achievements of students of the Music Education Department on playing piano pieces from memory was significant.
