Effect of musical training on high school students? violence tendency

The purpose of this study is to seek an answer to the question of ?If there is an effect of Musical Training on who takes musical training and who do not take at high school between the ages of 15-18??In this study; dependent variable is the violence tendency of students and independent variables are the type of school, musical training and place of music in students? lives.In this study, the findings on violence tendency of students with intense musical training from Fine Arts and Sports High school and students with no intense musical training from Public High School are searched and the findings plays an important role on national education system, school structure, shed lights on the future studies and a society on the basis of peace.In the research, data about having Musical Experience Survey and Violence Tendency Scale from students of 2010-2011 education period in Fine Arts and Sports High Schools and Public High Schools grades of 9, 10, 11 and 12 in provinces of Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin, Ankara, Trabzon, Erzincan and Adıyaman.In the study, scanning model is used. The study which aims to highlight the effect of musical trainings effects on students? violence tendency and measure the rate of tendency to violence between Fie Arts and Sports High Schools? students and Public High Schools? students is appropriate for relational scanning model. The research?s nature is a compilation of 5800 students from 89 Fine Arts and Sports High Schools 2002076 students from 3327 Public High Schools in the 2010-2011 educational years. (National Education Statistics, formal training, 2011).The sample of research is a compilation of 7 Fine Arts and Sports High Schools from 7 different region and 7 Public High Schools from the same provinces. For the determination of provinces and schools, random sample method is used. The units for the random sample method have equal chance for sample. (Büyüköztürk, Çakmak, Akgün, Karadeniz, Demirel, 2011: 99)During the sample?s calculation the formula of calculating sample, Karatay (2007) and the results gotten from Karatay, compared with the results gotten at the end of the calculation with + 5% error margin.As a data collection tool, Violence Tendency Scale, Göka, Bayat, Türkçapar, which is developed without losing the basics from old model by Göka and Bayat which is also used in Undersecretary of Family Affairs? study on ?Violence in family and social life? in the year 1997 and in 1995 the research called ?Violence tendency of High School Students? done in the name of National Education Ministry and the survey called ?Musical Experience Survey? is used which is developed by the researcher. SPSS 17.00 Programme is used for the analysis of data.At the end of the research it is seen that the tendency for violence is higher in Public High School students when it is compared with the students from Fine Arts and Sports High School and the training given in secondary school has a real impact on both student groups and as the training getting intense in high schools, the tendency of violence is declining. When the musical training is evaluated on the basis of school types, the musical training in high schools has no effects on students? violence tendencies, the musical trainings apart from the school education has impact on Public High School students and it is observed that as the trainings getting intense the tendency for violence declining. It is seen, private music training has no influence on Department of Music students violence tendencies. And it leads us to music culture state has a meaningful effect on students? violence tendencies and with the increase of music culture level, students? violence tendencies do show decline, type of music listened by the students effects the students? tendency to violence, students which listen arabesque, a music type contains high amount of despair shows violence tendencies much more than other students and this type of music is mostly listened by the Public High School students. Level of students? need to take musical training has impact on Fine Arts and Sports High School students? and Public High School students? violence tendency and it has no meaningful effect on separately in different schools. When it is evaluated by class status dependents, the status of class is not effecting the students of Fine Arts and Sports High Schools and for the Public High School students the class status has a meaningful difference in the field of tendency of violence and 9th grade students has less tendency of violence than 12th grade students in Public High Schools.Key Words: Violence, Violence Tendency, Art Training, Musical Training, Fine Arts and Sports High School, Public High School.
