A comparative examination of music teachers' levels of job satisfaction and professional attitude and the attitudes of students too music course

In this study; The levels of music teachers' job satisfaction and attitudes towards the profession and the students' attitudes towards music lessons were examined in the context of state-private school. In addition, by interviewing music teachers, it was tried to determine the problems experienced in the music education process in both public and private schools and how these problems affect the job satisfaction and attitude levels of music teachers. For research; "Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale", "Music Teaching Profession Attitude Scale" and "Semi-Structured Interview Form for Music Teaching Profession" prepared by the researcher were applied to music teachers. The Music Lesson Attitude Scale, which was created by the researcher, was used for the students. In order to apply questionnaires and scales to music teachers, a total of 21 provinces at three different development levels from each geographical region were selected from the Turkish Republic Development Index (SEGE - 2017). In order to determine the attitudes of the students towards the music lesson, 7 provinces developed at the 2nd level were determined from the sample prepared according to SEGE - 2017. In order to obtain qualitative data, a study group was formed from 29 music teachers. A total of 819 music teachers from public and private schools and a total of 619 students from 8th grades were reached. While the t-test and One-Way ANOVA test were applied to the quantitative data obtained in the study, the Two-Way ANOVA test was applied in the comparison of public and private schools. Pearson Correlation Analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between job satisfaction and attitude and between student attitude and teacher job satisfaction and attitude. The themes were created and coded by making content analysis on the qualitative data obtained from the research. The coded data were grouped under sub-themes. According to the findings obtained from the research; It has been observed that the job satisfaction levels of music teachers working in public schools are significantly higher than the job satisfaction levels of music teachers working in private schools. Considering the attitude towards the profession; It has been determined that the dimension of professional development and interest differs in favor of the music teachers working in private schools, and the dimension of importance given to the profession in public schools. Although gender did not make a significant difference in job satisfaction and attitude, it was determined that the professional development and interest levels of female music teachers working in private schools were significantly higher. It was observed that the job satisfaction levels of the senior music teachers and the attitude levels of the young music teachers were significantly higher. It has been determined that music teachers participating in in-service training activities make a significant difference in their job satisfaction and attitude levels, and that especially music teachers working in private schools have high attitudes towards professional development activities. It was determined that the students' attitudes towards the music lesson did not differ according to the school type, but the attitude levels of the female students towards the music lesson were significantly higher. According to the findings obtained in the qualitative dimension; It was seen that the music teachers found the undergraduate program they graduated partially sufficient, their pre-service expectations were high but they were disappointed when they started the profession, the profession was not satisfied financially, but this answer contradicted the answer obtained in the quantitative data. Responses were received that the job satisfaction levels of the music teachers working in public schools are high because they receive financial compensation from the profession, while the job satisfaction of the music teachers in private schools is high due to the material and physical environment. As a result of the findings obtained from the research and the results related to the findings; It is thought that it would be beneficial to prepare scales and conduct research that can determine the attitude levels of teachers on the job, based on the determination that researches and scales about attitude are prepared for teacher candidates. It has been observed that in-service training activities in the field of music education increase the job satisfaction and attitude levels of music teachers, and it has been suggested that the Ministry of National Education should focus on in-service training activities especially in the field.
