The use of foley art in musical stories related artist opinions

Abstract (EN)

In this research, which aims to reveal the use of foley art in musical stories according to the opinions of foley artists, the case study method, one of the qualitative research approaches, was used. The study group of the research consists of 15 volunteer foley artists working in Istanbul. The data of the study were collected through a personal information form prepared by the researcher and developed by taking expert opinions, and a semi-structured interview form consisting of 10 open-ended questions. The interviews were conducted face to face, online (Google Meet) and by telephone. The interviews were recorded to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the research and ease of data analysis, and the recordings were then listened to and transcribed by the researcher. The data obtained from the interviews were analysed using content analysis, one of the qualitative data analysis techniques, and thematic coding was carried out, and the findings obtained were tabulated and interpreted. According to the results obtained from the research findings and the opinions of foley artists, foley art is mainly used in the fields of cinema, theatre and radio and has various fields of application; when creating foley sounds in story (fiction) narration, the harmony of fiction and sound, sound and character matching, hearing close to real sound, material preference and microphoning are expressed as criteria to be considered; the type of sound effect used to enhance story (fiction) narration is acoustic foley effects; foley sounds used in story (fiction) narration are mostly used to enhance fictional description, describe the fictional universe, inform about character and space features, define the fictional universe and characterise voices; in storytelling (fiction), the various materials used to create foley sounds have an effect on auditory creativity and these effects enable the development of skills such as sound-fiction association, sound research, auditory awareness, sound recognition, sound discrimination, associating heard sounds with different sound effects and analysing sound characters; in the creation and development of auditory images used in storytelling (fiction), foley art has the functions of sound-space identification and concretisation; foley sounds used in story (fiction) narration facilitate the expression of the plot in fiction, support fictional transitions, describe the characters in fiction, save fiction from monotony and are effective in improving fiction; many characteristics play a role in the selection of foley sound effect materials used in story (fiction) narration, and they are usually preferred according to reusability, purpose and functionality has emerged. The main problems with the use of foley sounds, as expressed by the foley artists, are studio limitations and time issues. Suggestions from foley artists for more effective and efficient use of foley art in musical stories include: creating stories with music and foley content in formats that can be diversified and in an interactive environment; holding workshops where children can more easily establish the sound-object relationship by diversifying with studies where children touch objects and have one-to-one experiences; expanding the use of foley art in applications and platforms that children may encounter; including foley art and audio elements in educational materials; and expanding the use of foley art in different fields.
