N-alkyl benzimidazole-silver complexes and biological properties

Abstract (EN)
Today, increasing antimicrobial resistance, avoidance of microorganisms from the effects of antimicrobial agents and establishing different resistance mechanisms necessitate the development of new antimicrobial agents. Heterocyclic compounds, which manifested itself with the development of organic chemistry at the beginning of the 19th century. Also heterocyclic compounds began to be widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. In this thesis, firstly, N-Alkylbenzimidazole ligands (1a-k) and N-Alkylbenzimidazole silver complexes (2a-k) compounds were synthesized. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by 1H NMR and 13C NMR and microanalysis techniques. Subsequently, the biological activities of the synthesized compounds were determined by the pathogenic yeast strains Candida albicans (SC5314/ATCC MYA-2876) and Candida glabrata (ATCC 2001); for antibacterial tests, Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Staphlococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) bacteria MIC (μg/mL) values in were calculated and evaluated. When the MIC values of N-alkylbenzmidazole ligands (1a-k) and N-alkylbenzimidazole-silver complexes (2a-k) were examined to reveal the antimicrobial activities, it was observed that compounds 1a, 1b, 1ı, 1i and 1j showed no activity against all bacteria and yeast species no activity was observed. Similarly, compounds 1a, 1b, 1c,1d, 1e, 1f, 1g, 1h, 1ı, 1i, 1j and 1k were found to have no activity against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria. It was observed that compound 2h, which was most effective against all bacteria and yeast species, showed the highest antimicrobial activity at 6.25 µg/ml, especially against E. coli bacteria. Other N-alkylbenzmidazole ligands (1a-k) and N-alkylbenzimidazole-silver complexes (2a-k) showed varying range of activities against the tested bacteria and yeasts.
