Abstract (EN)
In the Ottoman Empire, ceremonies were the most effective way of displaying grandeur. In addition, ceremonies were an important social activity for the Ottoman society. They were carried out according to a pre-determined program and was prepared by a protocol official. If a problem happens regarding the protocol, the highest ranking protocol official would prepare "sûret" in accordance to the books at Office. He would work connected to the Grand Vizier and prepared the "Protocol registries" which would be referred when needed. In mine study, the transcription and evaluation of one of these books, Nâilî Abdullah Pasha's Protocol book, was made. At the Ottoman Prime Ministry Archives, the notebook which could be found with A. d. 359 catalog number, is the notebook that is believed to be a belonging of Sultan I. Mahmut, and it also has three more copies. This work, which Nâilî Abdullah Pasha wrote by compiling the laws of protocol, became known with the name of "Hattlı defter" in the Ottoman history. Primary subject included being; ceremony of greetings in festivals, feasts, acceptance of an envoy, laws concerning the council (Divan-ı Hümayun), funeral and wedding ceremonies, army and navy ceremonies. The style is slightly different from other protocol books, and the author, the rules and bases, have strengthened the narrative by giving examples of the cerenomies performed in various dates. This Notebook is a very important sourve both for the people who study Ottoman state protocols and for the researchers of the other fields of Ottoman history.
