The aim of this study is to examine the usage of music, sound, and language as narrative tools in novels and films. To achieve this goal, a method has been developed in this study by utilizing film, film music, and literary theories as well as concepts from the field of intermediality. By using this method, Martin Suter's novel Die dunkle Seite des Mondes and Stephan Rick's film adaptation are compared in terms of their sound elements. The analysis consists of three main parts. Firstly, in order to examine the usage of music in both works, the relation between the visual and the audio, the music technique, and the musical codes are analyzed. In the second stage, the functions of the sound in creating soundscapes, symbols or in manipulating one's perception are determined. Lastly, the characterizations through dialogues and monologues are analyzed. All obtained results are evaluated and compared by their narrative functions. Although the methods for film and literature comparison consider the specific tools of these media, it has been observed that no method has been developed to compare the auditive layer of the film with the novel. Both the fact that film analyses do not widely use the developed methods for sound, as well as the impression that there are no sounds in novels are the reasons for this niche. However, although texts cannot actualize sounds like films, they can still be rich in terms of sound description. Characters' speeches, narrated sounds, and the music playing in the diegesis all contribute to the sound layer of the novel's narrative. The telling of the phonetic elements makes it possible to compare the audiovisual film with the textual novel in all their dimensions. The results of the analysis show that the depiction of sound is an important tool for the novel, just as the sound itself is for the film. It has been determined that they are used to create the intended effect on the reader of the book and the audience of the film. Sounds are also used in order to narrate the emotions of the characters. In both works, an atmosphere is created with soundscapes. It has also been determined in this study that some sounds have symbolic meanings. Moreover, sounds are also used to divert the attention of the recipients. What stands out the most is the usage of music techniques in the novel. By referencing music, the narration and interpretation of the novel expands. The film uses music mainly to strengthen the effect of the visual layer. By examining the language in the novel and the film, it comes to light that both direct and indirect characterizations have been formed. While the performance of the actors defines their characters in the film, the descriptions of the novel's narrator build the characterizations. In addition, it is determined that the characterizations made by the characters' speeches are an important tool for the characters' formations.
