Abstract (EN)

The skeletal and dental effects of nasal septum deviation (NSD), its developmental relationship with the nasofacial skeleton and depth of maxillary palatal arch, and its effects on maxillary sinus volume have been evaluated. However, there are no studies examining the effects of morphological patterns of NSD on maxilla and mandible. The aim of this study was to retrospectively examine the effects of NSD patterns and morphologies on maxilla and mandible morphology, from an orthodontic point of view. Methods: Computed tomography (CT) scans were performed using the patients' data, who had undergone paranasal sinus CT imaging for NSD diagnosis. The presence of NSD in vertical, sagittal and coronal planes on CT images and types of NSD in sagittal and frontal sections were determined according to Mladina classification. Results: The parameters related to the maxilla and mandible (anterior and posterior nasal spina distance, maxillary width and height, maxillary height to nasal base and mandibular width) of a total of 337 patients did not show a significant difference according to the presence of NSD and morphological patterns . The maxillary width (63.09) of patients aged 16 and over was significantly lower than the standard values (66.2). All maxillary and mandibular parameters were found to be significantly higher in males compared to females . Conclusions: Our findings enabled the comparison of standard values with CT measurements performed for NSD diagnosis for the first time in the literature, indicated that the maxillary widths were lower than the normal values in presence of NSD.
