The conceppt of immodest love in Nedim's Divan and its contex

We have focused on the way the theme of love is dealt with in Nedim'spoetry in our study entitled "The Concept of Immodest Love in Nedim's Divan and ItsContext". The main reason that led us into this study is the peculiarity of the place ofNedim's understanding of love. Nedim did not like the way that classical poetry usedto stylize every feeling and thought including love by using fixed ways of describingthem; so he adopted a completely concrete understanding of love, and tried topresent this emotion as a part of the concerns of everyday living, insteadof abstracting it from social life.Nedim had an outgoing personality and liked to live in close contact withpeople. Therefore, instead of philosophizing about love, he prefered to write poemsabout the adventures of the flippant lover with his beloved, the moments when thelover burned with the desire to touch the beloved, the orgies of alcohol and musicwhere the beloved was also present, the voluptuous ladies who gave erotic poseswith the impact of the alcohol they have consumed, the intense excitement that thelover felt when he found the opportunity to be alone with the beloved, the details ofthe costumes of the attractive ladies during weddings, festivities and Sadabadexpeditions, their behaviors and gestures, and the sexy ladies who weremaddeningly beautiful. In the light of these subject matters, we have decided that thebest term to use for the kind of love that is described in Nedim's poetry would be"immodesty".We have taken the specific parts of the poems from the Divan, in which suchimmodest descriptions of love are given, and presented them to you with ourcommentary.We have also concluded that Nedim's special interest in pictorial depiction,his attempt to present love in a worldly light devoid of divine connotations, theliveliness in his descriptions, and the attention he paid to remain loyal torealism, opened the road, although not consciously, to the westernization of ourclassical literature and entrance of western style of thinking into our culture.We think that every work belongs to not only its writer but also the society inwhich it was written. Therefore, we think that Nedim's Divan, which belongs to 18thcentury, contains valuable information about the change and transformation of notonly the thinking of poets and thinkers, but also the general mindset of the Ottomansociety in the 18th century. For this reason, we think that everybody who wants tounderstand the first half of the 18th century, especially the social and literary life ofthe 12-year period that is called "Lale Devri (Tulip Era)", and how our literaturebecame open to influences from the west and what kind of early transformations ithas undergone, should particularly study Nedim's works.Key Words1.
