Hate speech view on Twitter: Altındağ events

It is stated that hate speech is the norms of expression in the form of verbally or physically discriminating, insulting and belittling a group such as a certain race, belief or culture due to prejudice. The media, where hate speech is reproduced, causes the society to internalize it by spreading it. The media, which is managed by those in power, attributes meaning to language in line with the interests of the powerful people it serves and ensures that ideologically based views are conveyed to the vast majority of the society through its discourse. Within the scope of the study, in order to reveal the hate speech produced in new media environments, the posts shared on Twitter after the verbal argument between a Turkish and a person of Syrian origin in Ankara's Altındağ district on August 11, 2021 turned into a fight and subsequently resulted in the death of one person were analyzed on the axis of hate speech. In this study, which aims to examine the discursive practices through which hateful posts are put forward on Twitter, the posts circulated on Twitter from the evening of August 11 to August 25, 2021, when the events in Altındağ took place, where intolerance and hatred towards those who are not one's own spread and increased their impact, were examined. A total of 1041 hateful posts were found between August 11-25. While 853 of these posts contained racially motivated hate speech, 188 of them contained politically motivated hate speech.
