Environmental movements in Turkey within the framework of the neo-gramscian approach: Akkuyu, Çirpilar, Findikli examples

This thesis focuses on environmental movements in Turkey, which have emerged against an energy policy that has been supported by an economic development discourse. It examines the anti-nuclear, anti-coal and anti-hydroelectric power plants movements that have emerged as a result of neoliberal energy policy in Turkey. Most studies analyze anti-nuclear, anti-coal and anti-hydroelectric movements within the framework of the New Social Movements theory. This study argues that these movements are supported by common consciousness, values and anti-hegemony groups built by organic intellectuals. In this study, New Social Movement theory and concepts developed by Antonio Gramsci such as hegemony, counter hegemony and Robert Cox are employed to build a theoretical framework.
