Abstract (EN)
m GRAFTING OF 1-VINYL 2-PYRROLIDONE ONTO STARCH USING AZOBISISOBUTYRONITRILE INITIATOR (M. Sc. Thesis) Suat KÂHYA GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Semptember 2001 ABSTRACT In this study, 1-Vinly 2- Pyrrolidone, (n-VP), was grafted onto starch using azobisisobutyronitrile, (AIBN), initiator, Variation of percent grafting with time, temperature, monomer and initiator concentrations were investigated. It was observed that percent grafting was increased with time and monomer concentrations up to a certain value then levelled off. Percent grafting was found to increase with increasing initiator concentration and temperature then shown a decrease. Optimum conditions for grafting were found to be [n-VP] = 0,7 M, [AIBN] = l,5xl0-3 M, T=70°C and t=5 hours. The rate of grafting was found to be proportional of the 0,84 and 0,85 powers of monomer and initiator concentrations, respectively. The overall activation energy for grafting was calculated as 4,9 kcal/mol. Further changes in properties of grafted starch such as intrinsic viscosity, water absorption capacity were investigated. Grafted starch were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy.IV Science Code : 405 Key Words : Starch, Graft, Copolymerization, 1- Vinyl 2- Pyrrolidone Page Number : 75 Advisor : Prof Dr. OYA ŞANLI
