Nizâm Al-Din Al-Nisaburi, his mathematical work al-Shamsiyyafi'l-Hisab: Edition, translation and historical evaluation.

It is important that a researcher who want to study history of science has an ability to study `manuscript tradition? and edit this kind of text. This kind of study will cotribute bringing historical activities into light so that present generation can benefit from them. It is regrettable that necessary concern has not been given to such important studies in Turkey which has rich manuscript collections. The aim of this study is to introduce life and works of Nizam al-Din al-Nisaburi, who lived in 13th and 14th centuries, in particular, his mathematical work, al-Shamsiyya fi?l-Hisab, with edition and translation with modern mathematical symbols. This will contribute bringing importance of Nisaburi and his work in the history of Islamic mathematics into light. With this M. A. thesis, which is the first step in academic life, the researcher of history of science will obtain necessary qualities that will be helpful in the subsequent academic studies. Biringing Nisaburi and his Shamsiyya into light will contribute to the studies on history of Islamic mathematics in particular and history of science in general in eliminating the obscurities of scientific activities of his era. To realise these aims, necessary search on history of science and of Islamic science and mathematics as well as on Nisaburi?s life and works is done. His works on manuscript as well as published works are examined. All the manuscript of Shamsiyya available in Turkish libraries are examined and five of them are selected to produce the edited text. As a result, this study contibuted making Nisaburi, who was known only as commentator of Qur?an, known as a mathematician and astronomer as well. This study reached to the concusion that Shamsiyya was a moderate textbook that was used in Semerkand Mathematics-Astronomy School and was commented on it. It was also used as textbook in Ottoman schools to the end of 15th century. Finaly, it can be said that Shamsiyya is part of the tradition of Islamic mathematics that started with Harizmi in the 9th century. It contributed to the continuation of this tradition.
