Abstract (EN)

IV ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies used by a Turkish mother while interacting with her school aged hearing impaired daughter in a particular context. The desing was "a qualitative single subject case study". The data were collected through field notes, interviews, audio and video tape recordings during the daily routines of the mother and her daughter. All the data were reviewed and catalogued on the activities. Micro etnographic analysis were employed on the selected videotape segments. In addition, a qualitative analyses was conducted. According to the results, it was found that the child did not ware her hearing aids at home. Her language was delayed. Her speech intelligibility was poor. The child interacted mostly with her mother in their daily lives. Their cooking activity was videotaped. The activity continued smoothly. But the mother mostly used verbal+nonverbal strategies to make the child response to her contibutions. Some of her non verbal strategies were systematic signs that were easily understood by the girl. This naturalistic study is one of the pioneer in the area of hearing impairment, specifically, in the interactions of normally hearing mothers and hearing impaired children. It's results created positive perpectives for the proper use of hearing aids to develop oral language. In the light of these results, the implications for the mothers, and future investigations were also discussed in this report.
