Abstract (EN)
The purpose of the study was to estimate some immunological and physiological characteristics of obese adults, as well as the relationship between age, waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI) and sex in both groups. Furthermore, the PCR-SSCP sequencing approach was used to investigate genetic mutations that may be associated with obesity and to determine whether the DNA polymorphisms of some candidate genes and obesity (phenotype) are related. The Nutrition Department of Babel Hospital, Iraq, received fifty-two obese patients (13 men, 39 women) (excluding cases with chronic diseases) and thirty-seven persons as a control group (19 men, 18 women) ranging in age from (19-40 years). In addition, all obese and control groups were from the same (Arab) ethnic group. Depending on BMI, obesity groups are divided into three categories as I, II and III. The current work is split into two to estimate physiological parameters such as Leptin, ROS, BMI, and WC, and to examine obesity-associated LEP gene polymorphisms and the possibility of a genetic mutation that carries a genetic disease. The results showed that women made up the majority of obese patients and there was a significant difference between the obese group and the control group in terms of age, gender, body mass index, and previous obesity history (P=0.05). The leptin levels in the obese groups differed significantly from the levels in the control groups, but the same was not true for Reactive oxygen species (ROS). In both groups, leptin levels were found to be significantly higher in women than in men. No significant difference was found between genders in ROS serum levels. Meanwhile, the results showed that there was no significant difference in serum, leptin, and ROS concentrations between the three obesity categories. Correlations of study parameters revealed a positive association between BMI and insulin (obese groups), as well as between BMI and ROS (obese female groups). Based on current evidence, differences in the distribution of age, sex, obesity categories, body mass index, blood leptin concentrations and genetic changes in LEP may be the main causes of obesity development.
