The relationship between serum ferritin level and metabolic parameters in obese patients

Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of obesity on serum ferritin levels and the relationship between increased serum ferritin levels and metabolic parameters. Method: The study included 935 individuals who were pre-obese and obese. This is a retrospective and cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from patient files and database. Body mass index, sociodemographic characteristics and laboratory values were evaluated. Women and men were evaluated separately. We divided the patients into four groups according to obesity grouping and the relationship of ferritin with obesity grading was investigated. Then, the relationship between ferritin and metabolic parameters of all patients was investigated. Results: 86.2 % of our study consisted of women. There was a positive corellation between ferritin and BMİ in women (p<0,05), but not in men. In women there was a positive correlation between ferritin and obesity groups (p<0,05). In men, there was no positive correlation, but ferritin was increased from group 1a to group 4a. A positive correlation was found between ferritin and FBG, urıc asid, creatinin, ALT, TC, LDL-C, TG in women, ALT in men (p<0,05). Conclusion: Obesity is becoming more important in terms of the morbidity it causes today. Determining the relationship between these morbidities and obesity is important in terms of primary protection and it is also important to find ways of treatment in secondary prevention. Recent studies have shown the association between ferritin and obesity and obesity-related diseases. However, more studies are needed for definitive evidence.
