The relationship of serum subfatin level and insulin resistance in obse patients

Abstract (EN)
The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared in 2002 that obesity will remain the most important health problem of the 21st century. Today, obesity is the second most important cause of preventable death after smoking. Insulin resistance is a complex cellular disorder that affects many organ systems and causes severe metabolic defects. Subfatin, a newly discovered adipokine, is secreted by white adipose tissue and skeletal tissue. The aim of our study is to determine whether there is a relationship between serum subfatin level and insulin resistance in obese patients. Our study consisted of individuals between the ages of 18-60 without a chronic diagnosis. A total of 100 people, 59 of whom were obese with a body mass index (BMI) above 30, and 41 of whom were not obese, were included in the study. HbA1c, AST, ALT, urea, creatinine, Lipid levels and CBC results of the patients were evaluated. Age, gender, height, weight values of the individuals participating in the study were recorded, and BMI and HOMA-IR values were calculated. In addition, blood was taken into tubes with aprotin to study the subfatin level. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age and gender. The weight and BMI levels of the case group were found to be significantly higher than the control group. Insulin (p=0.002) and HOMA-IR (p<0.001) values of the case group were found to be significantly higher than the control group. There was no significant difference between the case and control group in terms of HbA1c value. Total cholesterol (p=0.023) and LDL (p=0.001) values of the case group were found to be significantly higher than the control group. The glucose level of the case group was found to be significantly higher than the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the case and control groups in terms of urea, creatinine, AST and ALT. The subfatin level of the case group was found to be significantly lower than the subfatin level of the control group. In the correlation analysis performed in the case group, a negative significant correlation was found between subfatin and age, HbA1c and glucose. As a result, we found that the subfatin level was lower in obese patients than in non-obese patients. We think that new multicenter studies with a larger population are needed in order to use subfatin as a biomarker. Keywords: Obesity, subfatin, insulin resistance
