Comparison of serum irisin and leptin levels in obese and non-obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract (EN)

Aim: In this study, by comparing serum irisin and leptin levels in obese and nonobese women with PCOS,it was aimed to show the relationship of these markers with both PCOS and body mass index . Material and Method: Eighty patients were included in the study. In the study, two groups were formed as the control group (n = 40) and the group diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (n = 40). These two groups were divided into two groups according to body mass index as BMI <30 (Nonobese) and BMI≥30 (Obese), and a total of 4 subgroups were obtained. It was conducted as a prospective study in which demographic data and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded. The data obtained were evaluated with the help of a statistics program. Results: In our study, PCOS and the control group are in similar place in the mean age, menstruation age and anthropometric measurements. LH, insulin, HOMA-IR, irisin and leptin levels were significantly different between 4 groups. For irisin, there was no statistically significant difference between the PCOS group and the control group, while leptin was at a lower in the PCOS group than control group. Both irisin and leptin levels were lower in the obese group than the group with normal BMI. A positive correlation was found between iris and leptin. There was a negative correlation between irisin and fasting glucose levels, insulin and BMI, while a negative correlation was found between leptin and insulin and BMI. In our study, when the PCOS group was separated according to their phenotype, the incidence rates were Phenotype A 52%, Phenotype B 2%, Phenotype C 16%, Phenotype D 28%. In addition, there was no significant difference between phenotypes with irisin / leptin serumlevels. Conclusion: In our study, irisin and leptin serum levels were found to be lower both PCOS and obese group than normal population. While irisin is not found sufficient to diagnose PCOS, leptin may be included in the diagnosis of PCOS with 56.3% sensitivity and 62.5% specificity.
