Determination of the views of physicians and nurses related to obesity and bariatric-metabolic surgery: A case study

Objective: It is planned to determine the physicians and nurses opiniion about obesity and bariatric/metabolic surgery. Method: The holistic single case design was used asone of the case study designs created in qualitative design. The population and the sample of the study was consisted of physicians and nurses working in clinics applying bariatric surgery in the Healty Science University Antalya Education and Research Hospital, which was determined by a purposeful sampling method based on specific criterion or feature. 14 participants were interviewed. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 7 physicians including 7 nurses and 4 specialists and 3 assistants. The data obtained were evaluated by content analysis and document analysis with thematic analysis and metaphor. Results: As a result of the participant opinions, the findings were discussed in three sections as opinions about obesity and obese individuals, opinions about bariatric/metabolic surgery and opinions about metaphors and the participants' own health. The first part was examined in two main themes and seven subthemes. The second chapter deals with three main themes and eleven subthemes. In the third part, health behaviors and metaphors of the people were determined and fourth part was analyzed by documents. Conclusion: This study, in which physicians and nurses have mostly positive opinions about obesity and bariatric/metabolic surgery as well as negative opinions, gives information about the conditions of patient care and management process in bariatric/metabolic surgery.
