Abstract (EN)

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic disease which has serious negative effects on the social and professional functionality of one?s life, characterized by obsession and compulsions. In the treatment of OCD, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and clomipramine,a tricyclic antidepressant, are used as the first choice in treatment . Adding an antipsychotic as augmentation treatment is an often used method in treatment resistant cases. The relation between antipsychotic drug use and development of metabolic syndrome(MS) has often been studied lately. In this study, patients being followed with the diagnose of obsessive compulsive disorder by Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine Department of Psychiatry Anxiety Disorders Unit, were evaluated in two groups 20 in each as only antidepressant using and antidepressant together with using . The biochemical levels of fasting glucose, LDL, HDL, total cholesterol and triglyceride were measured. Arterial blood pressure, height, weight and waist circumference were measured. NCEP ATP-III criters were used in the evaluation of MS.As a result of evaluations in this study, 6(30%) of antidepressant using patients had the diagnose of MS, while 14(70%) didn?t. In the group antidepressant and antipsychotic medication combination using patients, MS was found in 4(20%) patients , whereas this wasn?t the case with 16(80%) patients. In respect to MS prevalence between these two groups no meaningful statistical difference was found in the evaluation. (p<0,05)However, this study didn?t show any statistical difference between these medications, clinitions should be careful about metabolic side effects while using antipsychotics.
