Salt glaze firing in wood firing kilns

The technigue of salt-firing was firstly seen in Germany?s Rhineland region in 15 th century, in a short time it was applied in many countries. This method which is not necessary to glaze-firing is started to be used as common in the industry of ceramics and the production of pots and pans aiming at using due to their economic property and easiness of applying. Salt-glaze affect many artist due to their original colors and textures, they also have a important place in fine art ceramic.The aim of this thesis forms alternatives of different colors and textures on ceramic surfaces by using the technigue of salt-glaze firing in the salt kilns which used wood as fuel. The prescriptions of body, coating and glaze used are investigated by doing a comprehensive research about the technigue of salt-glaze firing in this thesis. Considering the informations reached, the different prescriptions of coating and glaze were employed by preparing the body suitable to high degree.At the end of this thesis, it was tried to obtain a shining and thin glaze-layer by researching the different surface effects that wood ashes and salt vapor form on ceramic body. The diversity of color and texture on surface was enhanced with the tests of coating and glaze employed. Nevertheless, it follows that a successful salt-firing can be improved by the accumulation of information and experiences.
