Özet (EN)

This study undertakes an in-depth exploration of the social and economic impacts of historical pandemics, culminating with the COVID-19 crisis. Initially, the influence of previous pandemics was examined, emphasizing the significance of such health crises on economic and social landscapes. Concurrently, an extensive literature review was conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of COVID-19, particularly noting various perspectives on its economic repercussions and its parallels with historical pandemics. For the empirical aspect of this study, daily data from 35 OECD member countries was collected between February 15, 2020, and August 14, 2021. Key indicators such as Google mobility data, COVID-19 mortality rates, and the Stringency Index were utilized in this comprehensive dataset. Granger-Causality tests were conducted between these variables. The objective was to ascertain the influence of the pandemic on these economic markers, aiming to shed light on the broader socio-economic implications of such crises. According to the findings, governments took serious actions which restricted economic life during the early stages of the pandemic. Nevertheless in the late phases of the pandemic, although economic restrictions are more effective measures against the spread of Covid-19 virus, governments take restrictive actions in terms of social life rather than economic restrictions. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of the findings, outlining the limitations of the study, suggesting potential avenues for further research. Keywords: Covid-19, Pandemics, OECD Countries, Mortality Rate, Google Mobility, Stringency Index, Granger-Causality
